Senior Risk Analyst - Energy & Commodities

Overall Objectives

To work with team, or individually, to design theoretical risk management solution for new products or markets. To delegate work to junior staff members and take full line management responsibilities. To work as part of an IT and business project team and take responsibility from a risk perspective while implementing new solutions . To assist in the daily monitoring of a broad range of commodities & energy markets and to understand and measure member risks. To streamline procedures and processes ahead of implementation of significant new internal systems. To develop the job, management potential and own capabilities.

Responsibilities and Tasks

Daily monitoring of markets and members

• To identify unusual trading activities or market behaviour and manage investigation and resolution of issues.

• To consider, propose and implement improvements and changes to processes around monitoring, stress testing, member financial strength etc

Risk Measurement

• To suggest and successfully implement improvements to risk measurement processes
• To analyse back testing data to examine quality of current risk measurement.
• To identify inadequacies in current procedures and suggest improvements.

• To propose and test theoretical solution to risk manage new products or markets
• To guide internal or external IT build through requirements around risk management solution and fully support product from Risk perspective
• To review and comment on requirements documents
• To identify and solve practical difficulties around IT and risk solution.
• To prepare paper outlining risk solution for peer review ahead of project go live

• To work towards integrating current processes and procedures into generic risk framework
• To assist in theoretical and practical solution for implementation of Significant new risk management solution.

• To respond to member and client queries, both internal and external on all Risk related matters
• To undertake visits to understand member risk processes, procedures and future requirements.

• To delegate tasks to achieve efficient use of resources and take responsibility for work quality
• To direct and plan the development of junior staff

• To share EOO/ITD pricing and monitoring procedures and to assist in implementation of new systems to improve these.

• To identify and recommend areas of improvement in the maintenance and collation of risk management data.
• To identify and recommend areas of improvement for the efficiency of the department.

Required Skills and Experience

• Degree-level education

• Financial Markets experience in Front Office or Risk Management

• Practical Excel and VBA knowledge applicable to financial markets

• High quality written and verbal communication

• Strong analytical and problem solving skill set

• Strong understanding of market fundamentals and key driving factors  

• Clear ability to direct research tasks to test chosen theoretical solution

• Able to establish and maintain relationships at all levels both within and outside the organisation

• Strong analytical and practical skills

• Delivery of individual work to a high standard in set timeframes

• Able to influence decision making with effective reasoning

• As part of energy team or within IT delivery organisation

• Highly self motivated to improve and develop

Desired Skills and Experience

• Professional qualification

• Membership of an appropriate professional body

• Background in Energy &/or Commodities

• Previous background developing IT solutions from Risk perspective

• Project experience looking at new products/markets

• Understanding of London SPAN margining

• Knowledge of general market trading strategies

• Experience of line management responsibilities
